Last month I wrote a post about local seo traffic and link building strategies to gain local website traffic. This piece will focus on another aspect of SEO, on-site optimization.
On site-seo primarily involves making the content of your site more search engine friendly. Let's review some of the best practices for SEO from google webmasters that will help you improve search engine visibility.
1. Do not associate your site with link farms. Not technically on-site, I put it on a list as a preliminary caution because if your site is currently linking with spammers and farms, you will need to disown or disavow those links before proceeding.
2. Publish content that search engines can understand. Good content, meaning unique and original. Even though I am sick and tired of hearing about this and how content is king, it is fact.
3. Use keywords in page titles. And descriptions and h'tags. Do not overdue this, Google does not appreciate keyword stuffing, do use them, but use it wisely and where applicable. If your site is about category A, B, and C; do not stuff keywords related to category A on page B.
** 4. Have a well organized internal linking structure. High importance, with the exception of proper keyword usage, I would say this is the second most important aspect of on-site SEO. Have an appropriate hierarchy structure, one that will make it easy for your users to navigate and find their way through your site.. If your users easily able to navigate through your site, more then likely search engines will too.. Interlinking your site will help search engines crawl your site and find your content with ease. As a rule of thumb, all Pages/uls withing your site should be accessible from anywhere in your site.
5. Use a sitemap, specially if your site contains a lot of URLS & don't use doorway pages. Sitemaps are the search engines GPS system for navigating through your site, if your site has a lot of images also consider using an image sitemap.
3 More Tips to internal linking:- 1. Include your most important links in your nav menu.
- 2. No Javascript & no flash links use static text links.
- 3. link to other relates sites. Obviously it's better that these sites are ranked high.
Having internal links make your site easier for people and search engines to crawl and find your content leading to better user experience. Combine these tactics with a good quality relevant backlinking strategy & you are guaranteed to be unstoppable.
